A Study on the Radioactive Phosphorus and Calcium Uptake in Bones and Teeth


Abstract
The author studied the uptake, organ distribution and turnover processes of phosphorus and calcium using radioactive isotopes in mature male mice. The effects of testosterone and cortisone along with the changes incurred by cyanocobalamin on phosphorus and calcium metabolism were observed. The organ autoradiography was also carried out. Following were the results:
1. Testosterone treated group showed a lower 5 hour phosphorus uptake and a higher 20 hour phosphorus uptake levels than those of control.
2. When cyanocobalamin was given together with testosterone the 5 hour uptake was not lower and 20 hour uptake was much higher than the group treated with testosterone alone.
3. Cortisone suppressed the overall phosphorus uptake and this action was more notable in 5 hour uptake values. The uptake decreased in order of bones, liver and teeth.
4. When cyanocobalamin was given together with cortisone the suppression of phosphorus uptake was partially recovered, which was more remarkable in 5 hour values and especially in bones. This effect decreased in order of teeth and liver.
5. The radioactive calcium uptake was considerably lower than phosphorus not only in soft tissues but in bones and teeth. The influences of testosterone and cortisone and the effects in relation to cyanocobalamin tended to be similar to those of phosphorus.
6. The autoradiography of teeth using radioactive phosphorus and calcium showed the higher uptake in newly formed dentin and a trace in enamel. The uptake decreased in order of cementum, dentin and enamel.
7. In femur the radioactive calcium uptake was higher in epiphysis than in diaphysis.
